New power points and wiring, done properly the first time

You've run out of power points, need one added for a new appliance or workspace, or an existing outlet is loose, hot to touch, or has stopped working. Overloaded double adaptors and powerboards are a common cause of house fires, and a power point that's warm or discoloured needs looking at straight away.

What's involved

  1. 1 Assess the circuit the new point or repair will connect to
  2. 2 Plan cable runs with minimal disruption to walls, or discuss options if it's a solid wall
  3. 3 Install new points, USB outlets or outdoor/weatherproof points as needed
  4. 4 Repair or replace any point that's damaged, loose or overheating
  5. 5 Test the circuit and safety switch operation
  6. 6 Patch and tidy any access points, or hand over to your painter/plasterer if needed

What happens next

  1. 1 Call or message with what you need — how many points, where, and for what
  2. 2 We quote over the phone for simple jobs or arrange a quick look for anything more involved
  3. 3 Work is completed and tested, usually in one visit

Power Points — common questions

Why is my power point warm or making a buzzing noise?

That's not normal and shouldn't be ignored. It usually means a loose connection or a fault developing inside the point, both of which are fire risks. Turn off anything plugged into it and get it looked at.

Can you add a power point without opening up the whole wall?

In most cases yes, especially with cavity walls or accessible roof space. Solid brick or concrete walls sometimes need a small chase cut, which we'll explain and quote for upfront.

How many things can I safely run off one circuit?

It depends on the circuit rating and what you're running — a kettle, heater and air conditioner on the same circuit will trip it. If you're constantly resetting a breaker, that circuit is telling you it needs more capacity or splitting.

Do outdoor power points need to be different to indoor ones?

Yes, outdoor points need a weatherproof rating and their own safety switch protection. It's a common thing we find missing on older homes with a point added to a patio or shed years ago.

Will I get a certificate for new wiring work?

Yes, a compliance certificate is issued for any new circuit work or point installation.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, workmanship is guaranteed on all wiring and power point work.
