Safety switches that actually protect the whole house
You've had a shock, a safety switch keeps tripping, or you've realised your home doesn't have one at all. Safety switches (RCDs) cut power in a fraction of a second if there's a fault, which is what stops a faulty appliance or a damaged cable from causing a serious shock or a fire.
What's involved
- 1 Check what protection currently exists on your board
- 2 Test circuits to find out why an existing safety switch is tripping, if that's the issue
- 3 Install RCDs to cover all power and lighting circuits, not just power points
- 4 Test each circuit trips correctly once installed
- 5 Explain what to do if it trips again and how to reset it safely
- 6 Issue a compliance certificate for the installed work
What happens next
- 1 Call and describe what's happening — tripping, no protection at all, or a recent shock
- 2 We quote on the spot for straightforward installs, or book a fault-finding visit
- 3 Work is completed and tested the same visit in most cases
Safety Switches — common questions
Is it actually a legal requirement to have safety switches?
In WA, safety switches are required on power circuits in homes, and strongly recommended on lighting circuits too. Landlords have specific obligations to have them installed and tested. If you're not sure what your property has, we can check it in one visit.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Usually it's one faulty appliance, a damaged cable, or moisture getting into an outdoor point or the switchboard itself. Sometimes it's a switch that's simply worn out and overly sensitive. We isolate circuits one at a time to find the cause rather than guessing.
Should every circuit have its own safety switch, or can they share one?
Best practice is splitting circuits across multiple safety switches so one fault doesn't cut power to the whole house. We'll show you what your board currently has and what an upgrade would look like.
Do I need to be home?
Yes, for access to the switchboard and to authorise any work, and because we'll briefly cut power while testing.
Will I get paperwork for this?
Yes, a compliance certificate is issued for the completed installation.
Is this covered by warranty?
Yes, workmanship is guaranteed and the switches carry manufacturer warranty.
